Edinburgh Rugby flanker Cornell Du Preez will appear before a disciplinary panel in Dublin on Thursday to answer a charge that he struck the Munster second row Paul O’Connell recklessly.

The South African was yellow-carded for an incident during Sunday’s Heineken European Cup defeat in Limerick which arose when he entered a ruck and appeared to strike O’Connell with his head.

But the citing officer, Yves Thieffine, has referred the matter.

Edinburgh captain Greig Laidlaw was heard to protest that the player was “clearing out” at the ruck, which is legitimate.

If found guilty, Du Preez could be banned from between four and ten weeks.
