The University of Edinburgh’s men’s first XV lost The Royal Bank of Scotland Scottish Varsity Match with the last kick of the game after a pulsating clash with their counterparts from St Andrews on Saturday.
In front of a crowd of nearly 10,000 at BT Murrayfield, St Andrews raced into a 17-0 lead, but tries from Callum Simpson and Sandy Robson and a conversion by Will Stephen put Edinburgh just 17-12 behind at the break.
Stephen then scored a converted try of his own and they were 19-17 up and when Ian Vance scored a converted try they were 26-20 to the good until a late try from St Andrews by Rory Gardner – converted calmly by former George Heriot’s pupil Finn Murphy – saw the Fifers home 27-26.
Murphy of St Andrews won the Steven Sims man of the match award.
Meanwhile, Edinburgh’s women’s team won their match 36-7.
Lisa Thomson scored a hat-trick of tries in the first half and Lisa Pullan scored another as they went 24-0 up at the break.
Sally Stott and Helen Nelson added further Edinburgh tries.
