Emily Cotterill so proud of her Watsonian warriors

Watsonians captain Emily Cotterill believes her team-mates can go from strength-to-strength next season after they finished runners-up in the Sarah Beaney Cup on Saturday.

Hillhead/Jordanhill were too strong for the Capital outfit in the final, coming out on top 68-12 at BT Murrayfield to clinch the league and cup double.

The stars of the show for the victors were Scotland caps Hannah Smith and Abi Evans, both bagging four tries apiece and the former being named player of the match.

Molly Wright scored two tries for a Sonians outfit that never gave up and No.8 Cotterill was proud of the way her team kept going against a top-quality outfit.

“We knew coming into this that Hills were a good side and perhaps early on we were taken aback by the atmosphere and the occasion,” Cotterill said.

“They scored a few quick tries, but this team is not a negative one and even at that stage under the posts the chat was all positive and the girls were talking about how we could trouble them.

“We then regrouped again at the break and to come out in the second half, score two good tries and show people a bit more of what we are all about was good.

“Since the start of the season we have come on lots and I believe there is so much more to come from this group of players.

“We have shown we can play in the BT Women’s Premier League and I cannot wait to see how things go in 2018/19.”

For Watsonians, two-try prop Wright impressed in this match as did hooker Lana Skeldon and replacement Alice King who made good yards with ball in hand.

Head coach Dave Flynn added: “If we have to come here to lose to learn how to win then that’s fine and I think there is loads of stuff we will learn from.

“We rallied quite well and that’s a big thing. There were some problems on the pitch, but we managed to sort them out and I am very proud of the efforts put in.”

Earlier in the day, Glasgow University won the BT Women’s Plate and Oban Lorne lifted the BT Women’s Bowl.

The students got the better of Greenock Wanderers 34-17 with Oban Lorne seeing off Garioch 45-5.

In the men’s finals, Melrose won the BT Cup, Carrick lifted the BT Shield and Ross Sutherland took the BT Bowl back north.
