BT Premiership outfit Heriot’s are taking on select side the Co-Optimists on Saturday at Goldenacre to kick-start the new year (2pm).

The match will give the Heriot’s players a chance to blow away the cobwebs ahead of two crucial league matches they have coming up.

On January 9 they travel to Gala and then on January 16 they host Stirling County in the final regular season games knowing that they still need to make sure of a top four spot.

For this match against the Co-Ops, head coach Phil Smith has selected a fairly strong squad, with Club XV man Jason Hill continuing his return from injury.

Glenn Bryce also gets a run-out at full-back after an injury lay-off for the Glasgow Warriors man.

A number of fringe players are given a chance to impress, with Niall Campbell starting in the front-row, Josh Laird on the wing and Jake Becroft on the bench.

Smith said: “It’s a great opportunity for some of the boys to get a hit out after a couple of weeks off and an even better opportunity for some of the lads who have been showing up well for the seconds to push their case for more involvement in the firsts.”

The Co-Ops squad will be made up of club players from throughout Scotland, with a number of Capital-based players set to be involved.

The match-day squad will be confirmed today and is coached by Biggar head coach Gavin Blackburn and Ruaridh Pye.
