Johnnie Beattie, 29, was today added to the Scotland squad which entered a three-day training camp at Ravenscraig ahead of the opening RBS Six Nations clash with France in Paris on Saturday week.

The 34-times capped Castres’ back row’s call-up came as it also emerged nine players are receiving treatment including the Edinburgh quintet of David Denton (calf), Ben Toolis (back), Greig Tonks (concussion), Matt Scott (shoulder) and Dougie Fife (leg). Others under assessment are Glasgow’s Alex Dunbar (concussion), Sean Maitland (shoulder), Rob Harley (knee/ankle) and Perpignan’s Al Strokosch (shoulder).

• EDINBURGH Rugby’s European Challenge Cup quarter-final at London Irish looks set to be played on Easter Sunday, April 5, after it emerged the Madejski Stadium in Reading would be off-limits earlier in the weekend.

Reading FC entertain Cardiff City on the Saturday and it is likely the football authorities would oppose the prospect of a rugby match taking place on the pitch beforehand.

Edinburgh clinched their place in the knockout stages with a 38-20 win over Bordeaux Begles but even a bonus point was insufficient to leave them among the top-four qualifiers for a home tie.

The Capital outfit have five Pro 12 fixtures between now and returning to European action against opponents who have ex-Edinburgh players in Geoff Cross and Sean Cox.
