fORMER Scotland rugby captain Mike Blair claims ex-colleague Sean Lamont should be in Australia as a member of the British and Irish Lions rather than unwinding after taking his international cap haul to 79 on the three-match tour of South Africa.

According to Blair, who retired from Tests last year, Lamont has emerged as an unsung hero of a trip in which his experience was vital alongside a raft of debutants.

“With all these youngsters around him Lamont has really stepped up and is looking as fresh and strong as ever and played a vital role in many of the positive sequences of play.

“A strong, combative winger in the mould of George North and Alex Cuthbert, who can also play centre, I thought he was deserving of a Lions call-up ten days ago,” said Blair in a reference to retired internationalist Shane Williams being called from Japan to fill a gap.

Blair also maintains Scotland got refereeing breaks to beat Italy while insisisting: “Scotland have been on the wrong side of referee decisions before and will be again.”
