Former Scotland captain Mike Blair believes centre prospect Matt Scott could make a dramatic return from injury in Sunday’s opening Six Nations visit to Ireland in Dublin – even though he hasn’t played since mid-November.
Centre Scott injured a hand against Japan in the Autumn and plans for a return from off the bench for Edinburgh in the final home match of the Heineken European Cup against Perpignan were shelved at short notice.
But Blair said: “Matt Scott is definitely one to watch. He’s not played since the Japanese game in November but is very important for Scotland.
“He has got a bit of x-factor about him – and he has power and pace.
“They have lot of faith in him. I would not be surprised if he came straight back.”
Where Blair is wary is in the Scottish pack being tested in the same way they were in the Autumn.
“Scotland played South Africa who scored two tries from driving mauls and that will have dented the pride of the Scottish pack,” said the scrum-half.
“It is something they are working on.”
