Sonians still in the hunt

Watsonians won one event and were runners-up in another over the weekend as they kept in the hunt for the Kings of the Sevens title in the Borders.

On Saturday they retained the Kelso Sevens at Poynder Park, seeing off Edinburgh Accies in an entertaining final.

The men from Myreside had taken a 19-0 lead in that match before a hat-trick of tries from Alex Blair and one from Euan Bonner put the Raeburn Place outfit 24-19 to the good.

That was until a late try from Watsonians’ Ramsay Young tied the scores and then Mike Ker’s conversion won it 26-24.

Twenty-four hours later ‘Sonians reached the final at Earlston, but lost 33-26 to Melrose.

The busy weekend leaves them two points behind Melrose in the overall standings with just the Selkirk and Jed events left while Accies are a further five points behind.

Musselburgh’s fine sevens form continued when they won their own event on Saturday while yesterday in East Lothian was a fund-raising 15s match.

North Berwick defeated the Co-optimists 26-22 in a match played in memory of former NB players Russell Freer and Jonny Mitchell.
