Edinburgh Rugby’s Grant Gilchrist is boosted ahead of Saturday’s Heineken Cup clash at home to Perpignan after figuring highly in the tackling charts of Europe’s showpiece competition.

The four-times capped lock has made the most number of tackles without missing one – 43.

In the same chart, colleague Cornell Du Preez leads the way, with 58 completed tackles and only four misses.

Gilchrist says: “It is something I always wanted to work on and I’m doing that with Omar (Mouneime) our defence coach. I’m far from there as a complete defender but hopefully I’m making the right steps.

“I like competing at the line-out getting involved in the loose, making tackles, getting hands on the ball.

“There’s a bit of belief we can defend teams.”

Gilchrist revealed his contentment at Edinburgh after signing a contract extension. He said: “My girlfriend and I have just bought a flat together, We are settled and I would not have wanted to move unless it was a big rugby reason and the rugby reasons were all positive to stay.”
