Rugby: Wanderers see off Blues to maintain perfect record in National One

Murrayfield WANDERERS are one of three clubs in RBS National One to have ten points from ten after the Capital side defeated Edinburgh University Blues on Saturday.

Wanderers won the match 43-13 and along with Dunfermline and Kilmarnock have been victorious in their opening two matches of the season with bonus points.

Back-row Adam McFarlane gave Wanderers the perfect start with an early try. That was added to by tries from prop Nick Hart, a penalty try and one from winger Barry Turnbull as they secured the bonus point by half-time, but the students were still sticking in there at 26-8 behind. After the break Wanderers added two further tries through second-row John Lyons and full-back Iain Harper with the students scoring one of their own. It was a comfortable win but there was a scare when influential second-row Colin Powley went off with an ankle injury.

It will be assessed ahead of this coming week’s match against RHC Cougars.

At the weekend the Cougars did not have a match to remember, being defeated 41-0 by Musselburgh at Stoneyhill.

The fine win means that the East Lothian men also have two wins from two and are going well under coaches Brian Hughes and Grant Talac.

Linlithgow and Livingston have both lost two from two, the former going down 60-0 at home to Dunfermline and the latter 33-0 at Hawick YM.
