Scots stare at wooden spoon

CRAIGIELAW’S Jane Turner suffered her second singles defeat as defending champions Scotland were left facing a battle to avoid the wooden spoon in the Women’s Home Internationals in Lancashire.

After suffering a painful opening-day defeat against Ireland, the Scots had more agony piled on as they crashed 6-3 to England. The hosts won the foursomes 3-0 and, though the singles were shared, they ran out comfortable winners at Hillside.

After filling the anchor role against Ireland, Turner was moved up into the No. 2 spot by captain Fiona Norris, but she came up against a tough opponent in Kelly Tidy, who produced a performance that matched her name. The English player won the opening three holes then went four up after six.

Turner got one back before the turn and was still three down with five to play before Tidy sealed a 5 and 3 success.

For the second day running, Pamela Pretswell won her singles for the Scots, with Louise Kenney and Alyson McKechin also tasting success in the afternoon session.
