The Evening News understands that Staysure Tour officials are in advanced negotiations with a venue in the Lothians, with an announcement believed to be imminent.

It is already known that the event will take place on September 14-16, which is slightly later than in recent years.

The Scottish Senior Open has a rich history with the Lothians, dating back to when David Huish claimed the title at Dalmahoy in 1998. The Kirknewton venue also hosted the next two stagings before the event returned there for a second three-year spell between 2006, when Sam Torrance was the victor, and 2008.

Archerfield Links then became its home for two years in 2015 and 2016 before its next door neighbour, The Renaissance Club, staged the event last year.

Englishman Paul Broadhurst won on that occasion, regaining the title he’d lifted on his over-50s debut two years earlier on Scotland’s Golf Coast.

This year’s Scottish Senior Open will come after Gullane stages both the Scottish Open and Ladies Scottish Open, both sponsored by Aberdeen Standard Investments, in July.

Meanwhile, three players – Bathgate duo Louis Gaughan and Chris Curran along with Ross Noon (Renaissance Club) – shared top spot on 78 in an East Alliance event at a windy Goswick.
