Simon Lockhart springs surprise at Luffness New

Bathgate's Simon Lockhart defied being the odd man out at the semi-final stage to claim the Lothians Champion of Champions title at Luffness New.

The odds looked to be in the favour of either five-time winner Keith Nicholson (Haddington), two-time champion Graham Davidson (Winterfield) or 2003 victor Nial Gemmell (Tantallon) coming out on top at the East Lothian venue.

But, instead, the spoils went to Lockhart as he followed up a last-four win over Gemmell by beating Davidson 2&1 in the title showdown.

Davidson, the winner in 2008 and 2014, had booked his place in the final with a 5&4 success over Nicholson, ending his hopes of adding to victories in 1993, 2000, 2005, 2006 and 2013.

The Handicap Match Play title also ended up in West Lothian hands as Niddry Castle’s Peter Ogilvie beat Scott Leishman (Swanston New) by one hole in their final.

Meanwhile, the title decider in another Lothians Golf Association event, the Sivewright Quaich, will be between Buckstone Golf Club and Caermount.

In the event for non course-owning clubs, Buckstone beat Ethicon by one hole in the semi-finals, where Caermount defeated RICS 5&4.

The final takes place on September 4 at Prestonfield.
