Heatly competed in two Olympics, in London in 1948 and Helsinki in 1952.

In the 1950 Commonwealth Games in Auckland he won gold in the 10m highboard diving and silver in the 3m springboard diving events. Four years later he won bronze and gold respectively in the same events in Vancouver. At the 1958 Games in Cardiff he won gold in the 10m highboard diving event. From then onwards he was involved in the Games – and Scottish sport – in many capacities, becoming a life vice-president of the Commonwealth Games Federation. He was awarded a CBE in 1971 and knighted in 1990.

In 2002 he was one of the first inductees into the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame. He was 91 when he passed away.
