Edinburgh’s Robert Carlisle and Hugh Eldon made it a terrific day for the East yesterday, winning the Scottish National Snooker and Billiards titles.

The win by Carlisle made it a unique double, adding the National Championship to the East of Scotland title he won earlier this season, producing a solid performance in defeating Glasgow’s Gary Thomson 7-2 to win his first National title at the Minnesota Fats Snooker Club in Glasgow. Twenty four hours earlier, he had produced a terrific performance to reach the final, whitewashing Glasgow’s Paul McPhillips then defeating Craig MacGillivray 5-4 in the semi-final. MacGillivray will be hoping to get over the disappointment when he meets Robert Miller in the Masters National Championship final on Wednesday night.

Eldon produced a stunning performance to win National Billiards Championship, defeating strong favourite Dave Sneddon by only a single point by 423-422 in the two-hour contest.

Meanwhile, Michael Leslie was unable to recover from 3-0 down in the opening round of the Wuxi Classic Qualifying yesterday against England’s Gary Wilson, in his first tournament of the season after re-joining the professional circuit. Leslie reduced the deficit to only one frame with breaks of 55 and 59 but lost 5-2, with Wilson finishing up with a break of 98.

Musselburgh’s Ross Muir was getting his season underway today when against England’s Jamie Cope while Scott Donaldson was set to play Stuart Carrington tonight.
