Edinburgh MONARCHS’ reign at the top of speedway’s Premier League lasted less than 24 hours after Newcastle Diamonds ripped them apart at Armadale on Friday. It was a huge jolt at the end of a week which had seen the Capital side gain four points on the road in addition to capturing the Premier League Fours Championship crown.

Monarchs were unable to compete against a Diamonds squad who had the majority of races in the bag as soon as they hit the first bend in front and ran out 52-41 winners.

Monarchs team manager Alex Harkess today said: “I don’t like losing at all, but it was particularly disappointing to lose a match when we did not compete. We did not compete out of the start and were never in contention from the first bend onwards in every single race bar two or three exceptions.

“I don’t know what happened. You go along some nights and think if all the riders click we will hammer some team. You do not expect an evening when nobody clicks. From top to
bottom we were not good enough but we need to wipe it from our memory banks and try to move on.”
