Students all set to claim women's basketball double

Edinburgh University women, unbeaten this season and already proud winners of the Scottish Basketball Cup for a second year, will complete the formalities of adding their first Scottish League title when they host St Andrews University at the Pleasance Sports Centre tomorrow at 3.20pm.

Because of the antiquated system of awarding one point to teams for fulfilling fixtures and two for a win, EU could actually be overtaken by Glasgow Rocks if they failed to show tomorrow and for their remaining game v Polonia Phoenix, a ludicrous suggestion, of course.

EU coach Bart Sengers had in reality already thought that his team had won the title after last weekend’s results. “Yes we will show up,” he promised.

Judging by the way they halted the march of the Saints in the Cup final at Paisley’s Lagoon Sports Centre last month they will have few fears of losing tomorrow and will go into next month’s Play-Offs as red-hot favourites for the treble.

EU beat Falkirk Fury 94-31 at home in midweek and the main interest now is in who will finish second.

Edinburgh Kool Kats have just one game left and should beat old rivals Polonia Phoenix at Portobello High tomorrow (3pm) to put them on 32 points, a total Tayside Musketeers can match if they beat the Rocks at Broughty Ferry on Sunday and win their remaining game against St Andrews.

Rocks have three games left and could reach 33 points if they win them all.

Edinburgh Kings host Glasgow University at Portobello High tonight (8pm) and could end the students’ hopes of finishing second to new men’s champions Boroughmuir Blaze.

Blaze host Scottish Cup winners St Mirren in what should be an entertaining game at the Crags tomorrow (1.20pm) with Saints still fighting for a high Play-Off position.

At exactly the same time just along the road Edinburgh University host Dunfermline Reign at the Pleasance, surely a case for, if not a double-header, then at least staggered tip-off times?

EU, with only six players, travelled to play a strong Newcastle in the BUCS Trophy this week and were beaten 90-65 while GU went out to Derby 80-70 away.
