Summer League: Big wins for Bruntsfield and Merchants

With seven title triumphs in the last nine years, Royal Burgess have held the bragging rights in the north of the Capital for some time now.

But the Barnton club will have to overcome a 6-2 defeat at their next-door neighbours if they want to reclaim that crown this season from first-time  winners Turnhouse.

In a tight affair at Bruntsfield Links, six of the matches went to the 18th as the home team picked up the points.

Scottish Boys’ champion Eric McIntosh played his part, recovering from being four down after seven – he also birdied the last for a half – to win one up.

Similarly, Keith MacKenzie came from three down at the turn to win by the same margin.

Merchants, meanwhile, recorded a first win for close to three years as they made home advantage count to hammer West Linton 7-1.

“After a narrow defeat away against Royal Burgess last week, there was a quiet confidence amongst the Merchants team that we could get a win in our first home game of the season,” said Adam George.

“Looking back at the record books, this was our first win since 24 July 2014, when we beat Murrayfield 5-3 at home, and is our biggest win for at least six years.”

Turnhouse were big winners at Swanston New, while Musselburgh also triumphed on the road at Craigmillar Park.
