Table Tennis: Dalgleish in top form for Murrayfield

Colin DALGLEISH was in scintillating form as he led Murrayfield I to a comprehensive 8-2 victory over North Merchiston I and the Edinburgh table tennis league title.

Last night’s win by Murrayfield breaks North Merchiston’s nine-year dominance.

Dalgleish, 17, beat Willie Mabon, Stewart Armitage and David Atkins in straight sets while Christopher Wheeler also won his three and Blair Fowler two.

Wheeler’s victories mean that the 12-year-old prodigy remains on target to finish the season with a 100 per cent individual record.

An early 3-2 victory for Atkins over Fowler had given North Merchiston hope before Murrayfield took the next four matches and eventually ran away with the contest.

The six players involved will represent Edinburgh in this weekend’s inter-league competition in Largs.

Meanwhile, at the World Team Championships in Dortmund, Edinburgh’s Craig Howieson helped Scotland beat Netherlands 3-0 to bounce back from an opening defeat by Italy.
