Volleyball: Jets’ defence of Syer Trophy goes on the line in Ayrshire

HOLDERS Edinburgh Jets face their toughest test of the season as they bid to reach the women’s final of the John Syer Volleyball Trophy tomorrow.

Jets travel to unbeaten Troon Team Ayrshire in the knowledge that anything less than a 3-1 win would leave them short.

Even then, a win in four sets would mean the final place would go down to countback on set points and that could even leave the door ajar for North Lanarkshire, if they manage to beat South Ayrshire in straight sets tomorrow. Jets led Troon 2-1 in the Schelde Sports Scottish League last weekend, only to run out of steam and lose 3-2.

City of Edinburgh get the chance of instant revenge on Su Ragazzi, who beat them in the league last Saturday, as they seek to reach the final in the other group.

In the men’s competition, City of Edinburgh can book their final place by taking just two sets in their match with Bon Accord at Queensferry High School.

The league leaders are still unbeaten and came through last weekend’s test against City of Glasgow Ragazzi in the league unscathed, even though they had not managed a proper training session in the build-up to the game due to injury and illness.

In the other group, Kilmarnock Blaze host Glasgow Mets, with the victors assured of a place in the final.
