Watsonians boosted as they face relegation rivals Glenrothes

The Myreside men have had a tough league campaign to date and have just three wins to their name with five weeks of the season remaining.

That has left them in eighth in the table with tomorrow’s opponents tenth with no wins.

With one team going down come the end of August the Fifers look favourite for that spot, but a win in this one would reignite their bid to stay in the top flight and put Watsonians and ninth-placed Stewart’s Melville (two wins so far) on red alert.

Watsonians skipper Ewan Chalmers knows a repeat of the victory over Glenrothes in the home clash back in May is what is required to put any lingering relegation worries to one side.

“There is no doubt about it, this is a big game,” Chalmers said of the trip to Gilvenbank.

“The season may not have gone as we would have liked, but we have come close against top-half opposition and want to end the summer strongly in the coming weeks.

“Glenrothes may be bottom, but on their day they can be a dangerous side, particularly at home.”

As well as left hander Munsey, young player Patrick Brown comes into the XI having had a taste of first-team action a bit last term and a fortnight ago against Mazars Grange. The duo replace Tom Cullen and Rory Evans.

As mentioned, Stewart’s Melville are second bottom and will be keen to bounce back quickly from last week’s home loss to Aberdeenshire.

Chasing 190 to win six days ago at Inverleith, they looked on course to do so until Shaylen Pillay was out for 76 and they lost by 15 runs.

This weekend they are away to RH Corstorphine who were due to be playing in the Masterton Trophy final last night.

In that final they were taking on Carlton and, with the Grange Loan men now up to third in the table, their league meeting with leaders Grange will be very interesting.

Grange make the trip across town with Neil McCallum having made his 150th first XI appearance last Saturday.

Second-placed Heriot’s have the national T20 finals day at Poloc on Sunday, but there are league duties first.

With Keith Morton unavailable, Hayes van der Berg will lead the team at Aberdeenshire.
