80s icons retrun to Playhouse
PUNK Princess Toyah Willcox is all set to roll back the years at the Playhouse on Sunday when she leads the 80's Invasion Tour to the Capital, in the company of Paul Young, Martika and China Crisis.
The four iconic artists from the decade that fashion forgot will be performing on the same bill together for the first time, so expect a raft of familiar hits.
Toyah has had a incredibly diverse career over the years with major hit records and many stage and screen roles to her credit, but it was in the 80s that she became one of Britain’s biggest household names.
In 1982 she won the Best Female Singer in the then Rock & Pop Awards, now the Brits. Fifteen Top 40 singles and four gold and platinum albums later, hits likely to get an airing this weekend include It’s A Mystery, I Want To Be Free, and Thunder In The Mountains.
Also on the bill is one of the most popular solo artists from the era. Paul Young’s stylish charm and unique vocal talent quickly cemented him a place in the nations hearts.
Coming into his own with his first solo album No Parlez in 1983, he scored his first No 1 with Wherever I Lay My Hat (That’s My Home). The album also included the top 10 hit Love Of The Common People and the No 4 hit Come Back And Stay.
Liverpool’s new wave synth pop duo China Crisis features Gary Daly and Eddie Lundon who started to work together at the age of 18.
The release of African and White became China Crisis’ first hit in the UK, reaching No 45. The follow-up single, Christian, made No 12 in early 1983 and brought them to national prominence.
Completing the 80s-fest on Sunday, and performing in the UK for the first time in more than 25 years, is US pop singer-songwriter Martika who made her impact on UK charts with the No 5 hit Toy Soldiers in 1989. Other hits include I Feel The Earth Move, More Than You Know, Love Thy Will Be Done (written by Prince) and Martika’s Kitchen.
So, spike up that hair and look out the lef-warmers.
