Hallowe’en is one of a handful of dates when it’s customary to buy new clothes.

But why waste your hard-earned cash on costly novelty nonsense you’ll wind up wearing once, when you can invest in something that will stand the style test of time.

The high street is a hive for classic Hallowe’en dressing that you won’t feel ashamed to be seen in the morning after.

Finding a fun outfit is all about inspiration, be it from your favourite film or TV show. So the Evening News style squad selected six looks to help get you in the spooky mood.

1 Cat Woman

Putting some flirt into this year’s outfit doesn’t get any sexier than channelling Cat Woman. The high street is full of pieces to recreate the look, from wet-look leggings, to skin-tight velvet trousers. We opted for the former with a simple black body top that will go with everything post-October 31. All you need to do is find a cat mask, and to funk things up a bit, add a couple of studded belts and killer heels.

2 Charlie Chaplin

This look couldn’t be easier to copy. Get yourself a classic suit, bowler hat and bow tie then draw a moustache on with some eyeliner. Couldn’t be simpler.

3 Minnie Mouse

All you need to do for Minnie is team red and blue together then bag yourself a bow for your head. These city shorts will still look amazing when Hallowe’en is over. Plus the spotty jumper will look great teamed with jeans.

4 Cruella De Vil

Dressing as the classic cartoon villain gives you the perfect excuse to buy a winter coat. And the great thing is you don’t need to skin 101 dalmatians to do it. Clash animal prints to pull off the look and invest in some blood red lipstick.

5 Straight From The Office

There is no excuse not to dress up this Hallowe’en, even if you are stuck in the office. This is where the perfect little black dress bails you out again. This lace number from Whistles is so perfect it makes the £6.99 spider hair band look like a Philip Treacy masterpiece.

Pop on some leopard print tights to carry on the fun, then thank me come Christmas for saving you cash as this classic LBD will be the envy of everyone come party time.

6 Boardwalk Empire

There is no escaping Scorsese’s epic show at the minute so if you can’t beat ’em, dress like them.

To do vintage dressing from the 1920s simply find a full-length evening gown cut on the bias.

Team it with a feather or fur stole and remember to accessorise. Ladies were never fully dressed in the 20s without a hat and pair of gloves.
