Fashion: Hats brimming with style

Sally-Ann Provan is a woman in demand.

The Edinburgh-based milliner already holds Scottish Opera and Scottish Ballet as clients, designing magnificent headpieces for their performances.

She has queues of women requesting bespoke versions of her hats and still finds time to mould creative minds at Edinburgh College of Art.

“I love working with the students. They keep you really inspired in your own work as they always introduce you to new things.”

The next new thing on Ms Provan’s to-do list is weddings. The millinery maestro has just thrown her hat into the marriage ring, giving hope that there is more to headwear than veils and fascinators.

She has created a collection that combines tradition with individual style. Taking inspiration from the strong sense of identity she gets from her current client list, Sally-Ann realised there was a gap in the market when it comes to timeless wedding pieces that have a little bit of quirk.

“I was seeing the same thing over and over again. And since every bride is different I felt there needed to be something to reflect that.”

Taking the lead from one of her own bestsellers, Cameo, Sally-Ann set about selecting more bride-friendly colour pallets and materials to suit a bride’s head. This has led to a range that not only the bride can be proud to wear but the rest of the bridal party can pop on too.
