Fashion: Stitch in time for a style revolution

But the 21-year-old medical sciences student is no decadent rebel without a cause. He is part of a team pulling together this year’s Edinburgh Charity Fashion Show, which is taking inspiration from social revolutions – from Marie Antoinette’s Paris to the Sex Pistols’ Great Britain.

“The show is back with a bang this year and the chosen theme very much sets it apart from previous shows we’ve done,” says chair of the show’s committee Caroline Welles.

“The theme for this year came from the idea of what fashion looks like in a recession. This then evolved into us thinking about the different eras and figures that experienced difficulties. This is what is great about fashion. No matter what the problems, it still remains important and becomes a real statement of the times.”

Now in its 12th year, the fashion show has raised more than £250,000 – making it the most successful student-run fashion show in Europe – and this year all proceeds go to the Children’s Hospice Association of Scotland.

Organised by students at Edinburgh University, the models will wear the designs of such style luminaries as Calvin Klein, Reiss, Goodstead and Ben Craine, as well as returning designer Is Not Dead Paris.

Caroline adds: “We are delighted to have such a great variety of designers taking part. Every year we are surprised with the amount of support we receive from the fashion community, and this year has been no different.

“We are also grateful to everyone who has supported the fashion show and humbled at the generosity of local businesses and individuals who have donated their time and money.”
