Have a Green Tea with Blazing Hyena
LOCAL theatre company Blazing Hyena return to the stage this week in the world premiere of Green Tea by Sophie Good.
For her debut as a playwright, Good has penned the first stage adaptation of Joseph Thomas Sheridan Le Fanu’s Gothic tale Green Tea.
Directed by Jack Elliot, this immersive production opens in the atmospheric Gayfield Creative Spaces tonight.
James is a genomics researcher with controversial new findings he is determined to present at a conference in Amsterdam. But following another fevered all night session in the lab - a strange spectre appears on the bus and follows him home.
Haunted by its unerring presence; things in James’ life start to unravel and his partner Andy watches helplessly as his behaviour deteriorates.
A gripping production which tackles a psychological ghost story bringing it into the modern age and explores how we conceal our true state of mind, especially from our loved ones.
Sheridan Le Fanu, and Irish writer of Gothic and mystery tales, was born in 1814 and died in 1873. He was widely regarded as being a leading ghost-story writer of the nineteenth century.
His best-known works are Uncle Silas, Carmilla and The House by the Churchyard, and like those, Green Tea avoids supernatural effects in favour of the supernatural being strongly implied while a ‘natural’ explanation is also evident - the demonic monkey in Green Tea is only seen by the protagonist for example.
Blazing Hyena was founded by Jack Elliot in 2014 to introduce up and coming talent both on stage and behind the scenes. The company aims to produce theatre that gives a modern representation of life in and around Edinburgh, and attempts to bring a more cinematic experience to the stage.
Writer Sophie Good is cofounder of Leith’s writing collective Village Pub Theatre, while director Jack Elliot made his directorial debut with Living Like a Moth earlier this year.
