Yesterday once more at Dunfermline's Alhambra

ONE of the most successful duos in the history of pop music, there was a time when The Carpenters - siblings Richard and Karen - could do no wrong.

Over a 14-year period, they recorded 11 albums, released 31 singles and had five television specials, as well as a short-lived TV series.

Then, in 1983, aged just 32, Karen died from heart failure caused by complications related to an eating disorder.

The world mourned, but their songs lived on. Tracks like Superstar, Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft, Close To You, We’ve Only Just Begun, Top of the World and Please Mr Postman ensured their musical legacy would not be forgotten.

Take a jaunt over the bridge to Dunfermline’s Alhambra Theatre on Friday and there’s a chance to hear all these classics once more, when The Carpenters’ Story takes to the stage for one night only.

Created in 1986 by founder Phil Aldridge, The Carpenters’ Story was one of the UK’s first tribute-style shows. Now more than three decades on, the highly acclaimed concert production continues to celebrate the music of Richard and Karen Carpenter.

Starring Claire Furley, whose stunning vocal harmonies have led to her performance being described as an ‘uncanny representation’ of Karen, the show even boasts a fan in Richard Carpenter himself, who said it was “A very accurate and faithful portrayal,” adding, “I’m flattered”.
