THE Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) Edinburgh Branch has been promoting the enjoyment of Scottish country dancing since 1924, so where better to go to spruce up you footwork in time for St Andrew’s night.

This autumn, the Edinburgh Branch has launched a new set of Scottish dancing classes with a new dance, Edinburgh Dances Forth, devised especially for them.

With the nights drawing in and St Andrew’s Day fast approaching, it’s the perfect time to learn a dancing step or two ready for all those festivities.

Scottish country dancing has always been popular in Auld Reekie, and for the past 92 years, the Branch has been offering dance classes to everyone, catering for complete beginners, to those who ‘just did it at school’, to people who have been dancing their whole lives.

The best thing about the classes is you don’t need a partner, simply turn up and join in the fun.

“It’s a great way to keep fit”, says Scottish dance beginner Mary Forrester, “and I’ve made so many friends since I started last year.”

Classes, which start this week, run from September to May and you can join at any time. Each class has live music to learn to and is a great way to keep fit, make new friends and have fun, all while learning an enjoyable new skill.

Beginners classes are held every Monday at Murrayfield Parish Church, Ormidale Terrace, at 8pm.

For this with more experience there’s a Beginners Plus class every Tuesday, again at 8pm, at Barclay Viewforth Church, 1 Wright’s House.

Finally, an Improvers class also takes place every Tuesday at 8pm, this time at The Calton Centre, 121 Montgomery Street.

Classes run for 10 weeks with a mid-term break on 17 October and cost £55 for RSCDS members and £70 for others.

A Multiclass Pass is also available at £38.50 for five classes, with a top up option of three further classes for £23.

Beginners pay as they go, £8 per class.
