IN his new Fringe show, Michael Griffiths, winner of the Best Cabaret Adelaide Fringe Award, turns his attention to the music of Eurythmics star Annie Lennox.

Sweet Dreams Songs at Assembly George Square features classic hits like Thorn In My Side and There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart). Here Griffiths shares his own favourite Annie Lennox songs.

Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This): My earliest pop memory. I was barely 10 years old and remember being transfixed at the television gazing at this beautiful ‘man’ with porcelain skin and bright red hair singing in a field next to a cow.

Why: The ultimate torch song. This is my favourite clip or hers and I never tire of the moment when Annie joins in to lip synch ‘keep your big mouth shut’.

Thorn In My Side: I spent a whole summer singing along with ‘run run run run’ with this blaring from the cassette player. And I’m a sucker for an 80s saxophone solo.

Love Is A Stranger: So deliciously tortured, it’s like a Shakespeare sonnet lamenting the pains of romantic love.

Who’s That Girl: Annie went drag king to play her own love interest in this clip almost 30 years before Gaga ‘ripped it off’ at the VMAs.

Would I Lie To You: When Annie and Dave decided to emulate a Motown sound they nailed it. Perfection.

Little Bird: Annie owned the London Olympics with this one.

Put A Little Love In Your Heart: Not sure if this song’s a keeper, but worth reminiscing about the early Bill Murray movie Scrooged, which features this in the final credits.

Beethoven (I Love To Listen To) - Annie channels a repressed house wife who rebels by throwing plain flour all over the kitchen and emerging as a fierce diva in a blonde wig with killer heels whilst singing about Beethoven. As you do.
