GARY Thompson is obsessed with Star Trek. So much so, the first 15 minutes of his tale is dedicated to telling you all about it.

Gilded Balloon, Teviot

When he does eventually calm down, we discover he has actually stopped being a Trekkie now that there’s a female temp at his office he wants to impress. Yet, neither does he want to embarrass himself in front of his pals, who have their own obsession - beer and women.

What starts out as a geek’s confession, though, soon morphs into a deep, bittersweet story about bullying, love and the search for acceptance.

Given the increasing popularity of Comic Conventions (ie geekdom), it’s worth noting Thompson’s passion is no longer marginalised. And when you consider the recent passing of the late, great Leonard Nimoy, the time seems right for this kind of show.

Indeed, to successfully pull off such a one-man, one-hour production requires a strong script (Jon Brittain) and a highly engaging actor (Sam Donnelly). Fortunately, this show has both. And you don’t necessarily need to be a fan of Star Trek, either.

Logically speaking, What Would Spock Do is about being respected for who you are.
