This is what you need to know about Edinburgh’s role in the series on ITV.

What is Belgravia?

Based on the story of the same name, Belgravia was written by Fellows, and takes the viewers back to 1815 and the night before Napoleon’s battle against the Duke of Wellington at Waterloo.

The synopsis of the show says, “Belgravia is a story of secrets and dishonour amongst the upper echelon of London society. The Battle of Waterloo sets in motion a series of events that will have consequences for decades to come.”

You’ll follow the Trenchards, a family who have recently reached artisotractic status. The show stars names like Tamsin Greig, Harriet Walter, Alice Eve and Philip Glenister.

But, despite the name of the show, Belgravia wasn’t actually filmed in London. In reality, the majority of it was filmed in Edinburgh, with other locations including Bath and Northumberland.

Which areas of Edinburgh will appear?

Speaking to History Extra, executive producer Gareth Neame said, “It’s quite impossible to shoot in Belgravia. It’s the heart of London, it’s filled with embassies; there’s no way you can shut down these parts of London and have horses and carriages going around for four days.

“It would never happen, so what we did was go to the New Town of Edinburgh. We shot all of the exteriors for Eaton Square and Belgrave Square, we shot around there and then in post-production, we added all of the stucco and the porticos.”

So, acting as the location for the Trenchard’s family home in Brussels, is Hopetoun House, a Stately home situated in the outskirts of Edinburgh.

50 Moray Place, Edinburgh, is used as the outside of the family’s home in London.

When is it on and where can I watch it?

Belgravia aired last night, Sunday 15 March 2020, on ITV at 9pm. The episode is available to watch on the ITV Hub if you missed its premiere last night.

The story will be told across a six episode run, with the coming episodes also airing on Sundays at 9pm on ITV.
