Street Scene, Festival Theatre, Nicholson Street

THE worlds of Broadway musicals and classic opera collide at the Festival Theatre next week as the Opera Group brings its award-winning production of Kurt Weill’s Street Scene to Edinburgh.

Referred to by Weill himself as “a simple story of everyday life in a big city – a story of love and passion and greed and death”, Street Scene charts the story of a post-war, American melting-pot community surviving the hottest day of the year in a New York tenement building.

This production, in association with London’s Young Vic Theatre, features some of Weill’s most compelling music, including Lonely House, What Good Would the Moon Be and big dance number Moon Faced, Starry Eyed.

Winner of the London Evening Standard award for Best Musical Production in 2008, it blends Broadway musical and American opera.

The piece also won the first ever Tony Award for Weill, and features an eclectic mix of show tunes, operatic arias, jazz, the blues and spirituals.

At the Festival Theatre, many of the original award-winning 2008 cast will be reunited, including Elena Ferrari, Paul Featherstone, John Moabi, Kate Nelson, Charlotte Page, Paul Reeves, Simone Sauphanor, Joseph Shovelton and Harriet Williams.

Joining them on stage will be pupils from Craigentinny Primary, who will portray the children of New York.
