Theatre: EUTC confuse their seasons

EDINBURGH University Theatre Company (EUTC) return to the stage next week in German playwright Frank Wedekind children’s tragedy, Spring Awakening.

Wendla wants to learn. Melchior knows too much. Ilse wants to soar. Moritz can’t keep up. Martha’s beaten nightly. The others wish they were. They dance it out, scream it out, cry it out, laugh it out and get shouted down.

Devised around Wedekind’s classic by the cast, EUTC’s production opens at the Debating Hall, Teviot Row House, Bristo Square, on Wednesday.

A collaborative endeavour, the company spent five months devising this new version of Spring Awakening, which explores the lives of 12 teenagers growing up in a small town, though not necessarily doing it very well.

Vivid, stylised and heavily movement based, the piece is the latest work from the Bedlam’s Theatre’s resident troupe.

Spring Awakening, Debating Hall, Teviot Row House, Bristo Square, Tuesday-Saturday, 7.30pm (Saturday matinee 2.30pm), £5, 0131-225 9893
