Theatre preview: The Wedding Singer, Church Hill Theatre

They might not have been born when the likes of Boy George topped the charts back in 1985, but that hasn’t stopped some members of local amateur musicals company Allegro, embracing the decade that taste forget wholeheartedly.

Blair Grandison, Fraser Jamieson, Judith Neeson, Jennifer Good, Steven Park, Paul Inglis, Mairi Bee and Nicole Graham all star in The Wedding Singer, which opens at the Church Hill Theatre, Morningside, next Tuesday, where it runs until Saturday. The Wedding Singer tells the story of wannabe rock-star Robbie Hart, who still lives in his grandmother’s basement and is New Jersey’s favourite wedding singer.

He’s the life of the party until his fiancée, Linda, leaves him at the altar. Shot through the heart, Robbie makes every wedding as disastrous as his own.

When he meets Julia, an admiring young waitress, Robbie falls madly in love. Only trouble is, Julia is about to be married to a Wall Street shark and unless Robbie can pull off the performance of a decade, the girl of his dreams will be gone forever.

With a score that smacks of 80s power pop, let The Wedding Singer transport you back to an era when hair was big and shoulder pads bigger.
