This Is Not About Me: love, loss and the lies we write ourselves

A debut play from Hannah Caplan explores obsession, authorship, and the impossible act of moving on

What if you made your most painful heartbreak into a script? Hannah Caplan's This Is Not About Me blurs the lines between "the real world" and the writing world. This debut play centres on Grace, who is reeling from the loss of her 12-year friendship with Eli. To try and make sense of this loss, she writes a play.

However, what begins as catharsis unravels into obsession. The version of events she writes begin to become more alluring than the messy, unfinished truth.

Hannah Caplan says, “I have found writing this play to be an exercise in empathy. I quickly learnt that to write it truthfully, I must contemplate the aches stowed beneath our speech and hold in mind the bruising pasts that parent how we act. Crafting this story has been spiritual privilege, it has made me kinder person.”

This Is Not About Me is a haunting exploration of grief, ego and creative control. When you immortalise someone in art, do you love them? Or do you just need them to be yours?
