It’s one that developers are looking to capitalise on, with swathes of the city set to be transformed by the building of thousands of new homes.

9. Canonmills Gardens
A total of 184 homes will be created in the Powderhall area of the city as part of the Canonmills Gardens project, set to be completed this year at a cost of £27 million.

10. Former Corstorphine Hospital
Planning approval has been granted to turn the former Corstorphine Hospital into 32 flats, alongside 44 new-build homes.

11. Former Royal Blind School
Permission has been given for 52 new homes to be built at the former Royal Blind School and Lodge, in Newington, by 2022.

12. Former Boroughmuir High School
The £20.4 million project at Bruntsfield's former Boroughmuir High School is currently under construction and will create 104 homes, including 17 affordable homes in a new-build block.
