Despite the economic turmoil Covid-19 has inflicted on the country’s economy, it hasn’t stopped some businesses from setting up shop.

From drinks businesses to butchers to tropical plants, a variety of traders have braced the current economic climate and popped up in the Capital during lockdown.

Twelve Triangles has opened a new food store in Easter Road. It was originally planned to be a restaurant but the pandemic made the owners rethink what their customers want. Owners Rachel Morgan and Emily Cuddeford now want to focus on offering “top-notch produce” for people to cook at home alongside their popular sourdough, cakes and pastries. Shelves inside are lined with produce from trusted local suppliers including fresh meats, charcuterie and cheese from Leith’s East Coast Cured, organic vegetables from East Lothian’s Phantassie Farm and honey from The Edinburgh Honey Company.

While it's still a work in progress, Edinburgh nature enthusiast Andrew Forbes said he is “going big and going bold” with a new plant shop that he’s opening in 137 Buccleuch Street. The 25-year-old is transforming the derelict property into a tropical paradise where he will sell plants from all over the world. For every plant purchased, no matter how big or small, Andrew said 25p will go to Trees for Life, a charity working to rewild the Scottish Highlands.
