The Radhuni is a hot favourite with football clubs

Like all restaurants in the Central Belt, Scotland’s top curry restaurant has been given a temporary red card by the Government but it’s proving to be a winner with local football clubs.

The Radhuni in Loanhead has announced it is sponsoring four teams in Midlothian in the new season.

Forced to close until October 25 for all but takeaways because of pandemic restrictions, it has scored hits with Arniston Rangers, Bonnyrigg Rose, Loanhead Miners FC and Whitehill Welfare.

“Especially in these uncertain times when paying spectators can’t get into our matches, it’s marvellous that the restaurant’s owners are putting their hands in their pockets to help local sports clubs,” said Gorebridge-based plumber Rory Joyce, who helps run Arniston Rangers in the town.

“We also appreciate that the hospitality business is among the worst affected by Coronavirus, which makes its assistance all the more outstanding.”

Radhuni is providing the polo shirts which players wear before and after matches in the East of Scotland League.

John Richardson, manager of Loanhead Miners’ AFC whose main training kit is being provided by the restaurant, added: “We’re self-funding so depend on sponsorships, especially in these difficult times.

“Radhuni was one of the first local businesses to answer our appeal. Its support is brilliant and helping put Loanhead back on the football map.”

The club, recently reformed after a seven year absence, has joined the Lothian and Edinburgh Amateur Football Association (LEAFA) league.

It also has vibrant kids’, tots, boys and girls’ and over-50s walking football teams.

Bonnyrigg Rose, unbeaten in pre-season friendlies in September, play in the Lowland League having gained promotion from the East of Scotland League in 2019. Whitehill Welfare in Rosewell are the most most successful side in the history of the East of Scotland League.
