The British Youth International College (BYITC) has named eight winners of its fifth annual International English Olympiad competition, including 11-year-old Lakshitha Vinothkumar from Edinburgh

Lakshitha, who attends Gylemuir Primary School in Edinburgh, won level 7 award.

The International English Olympiad focuses on enhancing English language skills and covers reading, listening, writing and all-round comprehension of contemporary and traditional English language texts.

The top performers across each of the levels were awarded certificates and a trophy for their impressive English language skills. Participants are challenged by 50 questions at each level with results based on accuracy and timely completion.

Of the thousands of students from all over the world who took part in the one-day free-to-enter challenge, which is aimed at students ranging from five to fifteen, Lakshitha was one of only eight winners. As well as English classes, Lakshitha also does an extra class in learning the abacus.

Lakshitha’s parents, Vinothkumar and Sujatha, said: “My daughter winning this competition is a moment of pride for us. Her lessons in abacus and English are doing wonders for her overall performance. Winning this title would surely boost her confidence and propel her for higher achievements.”

BYITC’s Founder, Dr Rashmi Mantri, said: “This year’s Olympiad has been our most exciting yet. We continue to see students from every corner of the world demonstrating not only their mastery of English but also their creativity, reasoning, and confidence in communication. It’s incredibly rewarding to witness such enthusiasm for learning.

“Our aim has always been to make English learning engaging and accessible. Through our carefully designed challenges and interactive tools, students don’t just learn rules - they learn to love the language. That joy of discovery is what drives our success year after year.

“The global response shows a shared commitment among parents and teachers to equip children with the language skills they’ll need for the future. We’re proud to be part of that journey, helping young minds build the foundations for both academic and personal growth.”

Glasgow-based BYITC is also now the UK’s largest provider of Abacus Maths classes and creator of the world’s first digital Abacus maths learning App.
