Are libraries open? Date when libraries in Scotland reopened as country moves into phase 3

Scotland will be entering phase three of its coronavirus lockdown exit strategy from Friday 10 July, implementing a phased approach to lifting lockdown measures.

But when can we expect libraries to welcome the public again?

Are libraries open?

It was announced that libraries across were able to reopen from 15 July.

On 15 July, alongside libraries, the likes of museums, galleries, monuments, cinemas and various other visitor attractions were able to reopen as well, with strict physical distancing measures in place.

It is likely that libraries will implement physical distancing measures such as limiting how many people can be in the library at one time, floor markings to indicate social distancing, and perspex screens at points where face to face contact might occur.

Face coverings in enclosed spaces is also advised, with it being mandatory on public transport and in shops.

In the updated lockdown routemap, it explains: “As we move into Phase 3, it’s important that we all recognise that the virus has not gone away.

"As we have seen in other parts of the world, when given the chance, it can re-establish itself quickly. No matter how carefully we open up, it is likely that the virus will find potential opportunities to spread.”

Can I use any library services online?

Many libraries offer online services and delivery services.

The National Library of Scotland also boasts a wealth of online resources that you use, including eResources.

The eResources are available to access from your computer if your main address is in Scotland.

You can access things like:

- Full text reference works

- Full text newspapers, journals and reports

- Digitised books, periodicals and manuscripts spanning over five centuries

- Records and abstracts via online services and databases
