Edinburgh was beaten only by Oxford, Cambridge, UCL and Imperial in a list of over 25,000 universities across Britain.
As well as being in the top percentile of UK universities, Edinburgh University was listed as the 55th best university in the world.
The study into the quality of universities took into account a number of factors such as the quality of teaching, post-study employment rates and academic citations. The rankings also looked to analyse the “broad impact” each university had on a global scale.
The University of Edinburgh was the top-ranked Scottish university with Glasgow University coming 9th in the UK, St Andrews was ranked 28th and the University of Strathclyde finished 36th.
