Name chosen for new Edinburgh primary school in vote by parents, staff and community reps

A NEW school in the south-east of the city is to be named Frogston Primary after a vote by parents, staff and community representatives.

How the new Frogston Primary School will look

The school, which was due to open in August but has been delayed because of Covid, had originally been given the working title Broomhills Primary.

But it was always planned to consult the new school community in agreeing the name.

A survey was conducted among parents, staff, local councillors and community councillors. There were 81 online responses and also 28 responses from pupils.

Two suggested names were ruled out in case they caused confusion – Pentland View Primary was considered too similar to the existing Pentland Primary and Castlelaw too close to Castleview.

In the final vote, Frogston got 53 votes, Broomhills 43 and Allermuir 13.

The new school is intended to cater for the growing population in the south-east of the city and to accommodate pupils from new housing sites

approved in the Local Development Plan. It is being constructed in the new housing development to the south of Frogston Road East.

P1 pupils who started at the school in August are currently based at Valley Park community centre.

Construction work has re-started on the building and it is now estimated the new school will be ready for occupation from Easter 2021.

Now the new name has been agreed the school can make all the necessary administrative arrangements in advance of the move to its new building promote its new identity, including the enrolment process for new pupils for August 2021 which begins after the October break.
