Coronavirus in Scotland: 978 new cases recorded in the past 24 hours

A total of cases 978 and 88 new deaths have been recorded across Scotland in the last 24 hours, the First Minister reveals today.

Speaking at Parliament in Holyrood this afternoon – just before First Minister’s Questions – Nicola Sturgeon said that the new cases represent 5.1 % of the total number of tests carried out.

This takes the total number of covid cases in Scotland up to 182,269.

1,871 people are currently in hospital with covid which is a decrease of 63 from yesterday and 128 people are in intensive care- 12 fewer than yesterday.

Sadly, 88 additional deaths have been registered in the past 24 hours of patients who first tested positive with the virus in the previous 28 days.

This takes the total number of coronavirus deaths under that daily measurement to 6,269.

Up until January 31, 8,347 deaths were registered and in the past week alone 440 deaths were recorded where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate, 12 fewer than in the previous week.

301 of the deaths occurred in hospitals, 97 in care homes, 38 at home or other non institutional settings and 4 in other institutions.

As of 8.30 am this morning, 649, 262 people in Scotland had received their first dose of the vaccine- an increase of 38,484 since the figure reported yesterday.

This is the highest vaccine distribution figure so far- 59% up from the figure reported on the same day last week.

The total figure includes 98% of residents in older people’s care homes and in addition 87% of over 80s living in the community have had their first dose, however, research suggests that figure may be higher.

28% of people aged between 75-79 have also had their first dose.

The figures come after the First Minister announced yesterday that the youngest primary school children will return to full time schooling in three weeks’ time, February 22, as Scotland remains in lockdown until at least March.
