Coronavirus in Scotland: Nicola Sturgeon confirms 160 new cases of Covid-19

Speaking at her daily press briefing, the First Minister confirmed that 160 people have tested positive for Covid-19 in the last 24 hours.

The surge of new cases is 37 higher than the 123 reported on Sunday.

Ms Sturgeon called the news “undoubtedly a concern”, and any patterns in the cases are being examined.

The 160 new cases represent 0.9 per cent of all those tested since yesterday.

Health board breakdown

Tayside - 14 new cases

Grampian - 4 new cases

Great Glasgow and Clyde - 69 new cases

Lanarkshire - 27 new cases

Lothian - 18

Forth Valley - 9 new cases

Ayrshire and Arran - 8 new cases

Commenting on the surge in cases in Greater Glasgow and Clyde, Ms Sturgeon said the government was paying “particular attention” to the region and was “considering whether any specific action that may be required.”

But the low number reported in NHS Grampian, Ms Sturgeon said, demonstrated that the Aberdeen pub cluster had been “contained” successfully.

Today’s figures also show that there were no new deaths of people who tested positive for the virus in the last 24 hours.

A total of 2,494 patients have died in Scotland after testing positive for coronavirus.

The number of patients in hospital with confirmed or suspected coronavirus stands at 258 - seven more than yesterday.

Five people are now being treated for the virus in Scotland’s intensive care units.
