His children have stayed away from George Heriot's School this week as a precaution.

Principle Lesley Franklin wrote a letter to all parents assuring them guidance is being followed and the school is open as normal.

"I write to inform you that a Heriot’s parent, who recently travelled to Italy, has tested positive for coronavirus," wrote Ms Franklin.

"He returned to Edinburgh on Saturday, visited home briefly, before self-isolating.

"He had no symptoms on return and, according to Health Protection Scotland, was therefore not infectious at that point."

"Although they saw him for a very brief time, as a precaution, his children have not attended school this week, and continue to follow self-isolation guidance in accordance with Health Protection Scotland instructions.

"Please be assured that we continue to liaise with the family and relevant organisations. School is therefore open as normal."
