Edinburgh Southern Labour MSP Daniel Johnson said a number of distressed constituents had contacted him about a lack of availability. And now he and his MP colleague Ian Murray have written to Nicola Sturgeon raising concerns.

He questioned the suitability of the walk-through site in Princes Street Gardens for people who struggle with mobility and are part of the shielded group.

He said people reported being turned away from drive-through centres.

And he highlighted concerns about access to the vaccine through pharmacies.

People have been informed that while many pharmacies have now run out of NHS flu jabs they are able to offer it for a fee.

“I have also been informed that certain pharmacies have asked for more NHS flu jabs but this has not been made available.”In his letter to the First Minister, Mr Johnson added: “These issues point to a very difficult situation developing where people may go without their flu jab.”

And he told the Evening News: “As we edge closer to winter and Covid restrictions look likely to be made stricter, an already distressing time is being far more serious for those vulnerable constituents who require the seasonal flu jab.

“We need this process working and need it working now.”

Ten drive-through sites have been set up in Edinburgh and will operate until December.

Last week there were reports of people being turned away and others queuing for hours due to demand.

The Edinburgh Health and Social Care Partnership said there had been teething problems at the start.
