A further 30 people have tested positive for coronavirus in Edinburgh and the Lothians, with 203 new cases across Scotland.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon revealed the figures during her daily briefing on Friday afternoon.

The total number of people in the NHS Lothian health board area who have tested positive for the virus now stands at 3,781.

23,776 people have tested positive for coronavirus in Scotland.

One person who tested positive for the virus has died within the last 24 hours bringing the death toll in Scotland to 2,502.

Of the latest 203 coronavirus cases reported, 69 are in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde health board, 30 in Lothian and 29 in Lanarkshire. The remaining 75 cases are spread across the remaining eight health board areas.

There are 61 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus, up by nine in 24 hours. Of these patients, five were in intensive care, which is no change on yesterday.

Ms Sturgeon warned in her briefing that case numbers were on the rise and today’s positive coronavirus figure represents 4.4% of people newly tested.

It was announced that people returning from Slovenia and Guadeloupe must now self-isolate for 14 days when they come back to Scotland.

Ms Sturgeon has asked the public to stick ‘rigorously’ to the existing rules over the course of this weekend to prevent the growth of the virus.

She warned that this weekend ‘will be critical’ in deciding the next steps and that the coming days were likely to see some hard ‘but necessary’ decisions and that rules must be stuck to to prevent another lockdown.

She said: “The bottom line here is this virus is on the rise again. Cases are rising quite rapidly. The percentage of tests is not as high as March but is rising. And the R number is now above 1.”

The First Minister has advised Scots to follow all advice and rules such as work from home, avoid non-essential travel, stick to the six people/two household rule and abide by local restrictions.

Professor Jason Leitch confirmed that one Edinburgh Rugby Academy player has tested positive for coronavirus after flouting restrictions by attending a house party on Friday with three other players.

The unnamed player who tested positive and three others are now self-isolating along with no others within the club deemed affected by the local health protection authorities.
