Speaking during the government's daily briefing, Dr Gregor Smith confirmed meetings face-to-face are still permitted if necessary for the benefit of the patient.
He said: “People coming together for care and support is okay.
"Mental health and wellbeing support should, in general, be provided remotely where possible. But if the use of technology would not result in the same benefit of face to face meetings, support can be delivered in person.”
Dr Smith clarified the Scottish Government’s latest coronavirus measures still apply, and the layout of some rooms where mental health and wellbeing services take place should be adapted to suit safe social distancing.
During his announcement he confirmed the hours for the NHS mental health hub, which can be contacted on 111, have been extended to 24 hours, seven days a week.
