Coronavirus in Scotland: Wetherspoons to close all pubs with one exception in Scottish tier three areas

The Herald has said that the Auld Brig in Irvine will be the only Wetherspoons pub in tier three areas that will remain open.

The company say that this pub has enough business to sustain it due to the fact it is based in a shopping centre.

The Scottish tier systems doesn’t insist that pubs be closed until tier four.

In tier three, pubs may remain open but are prohibited from selling alcohol, and must close at 6pm every evening.

Most of the central belt, including Glasgow, Edinburgh and Fife, are in tier three.

The company has said that the new Scottish tier system is “having a serious effect on trade."

Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: “We can confirm that 46 of our 61 pubs in Scotland will close from 6pm Saturday and reopen when restrictions are eased and our pubs can trade more normally.

“The Auld Brigg will remain open as it is part of a shopping centre which is attracting people.

“We look forward to reopening our pubs in due course.”

Other tier three measures include no longer allowing drive-in events and cinemas, arcades and bingo halls will also be shuttered.

Indoor exercise will be limited to individual workouts, with outdoor exercise only allowed for those under the age of 18, except professional sports.

Fife was recently moved into tier three and the rules came into effect at 6am on Friday.
