A DISTRAUGHT Asian mum has told how young yobs verbally abused her family and accused them of having coronavirus.

Police are investigating after care worker Onuma Wannabut, originally from Thailand, and her three children were targeted at their Prestonpans home.

One of the two youths bared his backside before yelling: “Get back in your f***ing window before you give us the f***ing coronavirus."

Onuma was having dinner in the kitchen of her flat shortly after 8pm on Thursday when she heard a loud bang from her front door.

“I thought someone's trying to break in,” said the 35-year-old. “I opened the living room window and looked out and could see two teens were looking and hiding behind the side of a building waiting for our reactions.

“I then shout out loud to them saying ‘you cannot bang on people’s door like that, what do you want?’ One of them turned around showing and shaking his butt at me, I then said I will call the police.”

Onuma said the pair then laughed at her before yelling the sickening abuse and walking down the street.

Her eldest daughter, May, 16, chased after the youths. “She said she was going to batter them,” said Onuma. “So I had to follow her.”

They found a group of about ten boys and girls at the end of the street and recognised the youths who ran off after being shouted at.

Onuma and May returned home to Stefan, 14, and six-year-old Shereena, and phoned the police.

“I couldn’t sleep last night it was so stressful - I was so angry.

“It’s definitely affecting me and my family, especially with the virus going on affecting the whole world already, they shouldn’t be going to individual’s doors and all that.

“It has the potential to make this situation a lot worse than it already is now.”

Onuma has now thanked neighbours for rallying round her family in support and condemning the abuse.

“There are not a lot of Thai and Asian people living in Prestonpans. A lot of people know us and respect us.

“It’s like Eastenders or Coronation Street going into a shop. Everybody knows who we are, this is our home.

“It’s not like in Edinburgh where people come in and go home - this has been my home for 17 years - it shouldn’t be happening like this.

“It shouldn’t happen anywhere, they need to respect people more and where they come from.

“My neighbour was lovely when I got back and was trying to support me and ask what was going on which is nice - made us feel like it’s not just us here and we’re not alone.”

A Police spokeswoman confirmed officers are investigating and appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

She added: "Police received a report of youths using abusive behaviour outside a property on Salt Preston Place around 8.15pm on Thursday, 19 March, 2020. Local officers are aware and enquiries are ongoing."
